Improvements Planned for I-820 East Loop Beginning in 2018
Following the successful completion of the North Tarrant Express Project which improved traffic flow on NE Loop 820, the Texas Department of Transportation will begin construction in late spring of 2018 to widen and reconstruct the Interstate 820 East Loop from SH 121/183 to Randall Mill Road.More information from TxDOT can be found here.
The I-820 East Loop currently carries nearly 160,000 vehicles per day, including traffic exiting and entering the North Tarrant Express. This $200 million project aims to alleviate traffic flow issues on this busy four-mile stretch of highway by adding one main lane in each direction and replacing the bridges at the Trinity River and SH 10.
These improvements will expand I-820 to eleven lanes at its widest point, with five to six lanes in each direction, and extend the managed lanes from the North Tarrant Express to I-820 East and SH 121. The project will further a congestion by constructing direct connect ramps to/from SH 121 that will eliminate the weaving and merging of traffic at this interchange.
Construction is estimated for substantial completion in 2021.
